Piraeus Chamber of Commerce demands transparency on unemployment contributions
The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce (ESP) has submitted a letter to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security requesting a comprehensive financial audit of the special monthly contribution paid by self-employed professionals and freelancers.
Established in 2011 during the economic crisis, the 10-euro monthly contribution (120 euros annually) funds the Special Unemployment Account. The ESP is seeking clarification on how much capital has been accumulated since 2011, how much has been distributed in unemployment benefits or social assistance, how many professionals have actually benefited, and the current available reserve.
According to data cited by the Chamber, monthly transfers from e-EFKA to the Public Employment Service (DYPA) are estimated between 6 and 8 million euros, potentially totaling 72 to 96 million euros annually. While the ESP does not dispute that the funds are transferred to DYPA, it emphasizes the need for transparency regarding the ultimate utilization and effectiveness of the mechanism.
