Greek unemployment fund and service transparency disputes
Overview
The Piraeus Chamber of Commerce (ESP) has formally requested a financial audit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security regarding the Special Unemployment Account. This fund, established in 2011, is supported by monthly contributions from self-employed professionals and freelancers. The ESP is seeking clarity on the total accumulated capital, the amount distributed in benefits, the number of beneficiaries, and the current reserves, noting that annual transfers to the Public Employment Service (DYPA) are estimated between 72 and 96 million euros.
Following these demands, the Panhellenic Association of OAED Employees (PANSYPO) has criticized the transparency of DYPA’s employment reports spanning 2019 to 2026. While official figures cite over 300,000 beneficiaries, PANSYPO argues that reports lack essential data on permanent employment rates, contract types, and actual salaries. The union also highlighted that many reported positions were merely work experience agreements and expressed concern over the lack of long-term sustainability data for entrepreneurship programs and the insufficient representation of long-term unemployed individuals in available programs.
