Pirelli, Pyrum, Synthos and BASF launch European tire‑to‑tire recycling loop

Italian tyre producer Pirelli has teamed with tyre‑recycling firm Pyrum Innovations, Polish synthetic‑rubber maker Synthos and German chemical giant BASF to create a tyre‑to‑tyre circular‑economy project across Europe. End‑of‑life and scrap tyres gathered in Germany—from retail outlets, motorsport events and Pirelli’s Breuberg plant—are pyrolysed by Pyrum into recovered carbon black (rCB) and tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO). The rCB is upgraded and fed back into Pirelli’s European production, partially replacing virgin carbon black, while the TPO is supplied to BASF to co‑produce chemicals such as butadiene and styrene. Synthos uses the TPO under the ISCC PLUS certification to make synthetic rubber, which Pirelli then incorporates into new tyres, closing the material loop. The initiative is certified under the ISCC PLUS scheme to ensure traceability and to demonstrate how end‑of‑life tyres can become a valuable, certified feedstock within a coordinated industrial ecosystem.
