Pisa honors families of Italian citizens deported to Nazi camps
A ceremony was held at the Prefecture of Pisa to present honor medals, granted by the President of the Republic, to the families of Italian citizens who were deported to Nazi concentration camps during World War II.
The event honors military personnel who, following the armistice of September 8, 1943, refused to collaborate with Nazi forces and the Italian Social Republic. These individuals were stripped of their prisoner-of-war status and subjected to forced labor. Among those honored were Serafino Arrighi, Giovanni Baldelli, Paolo Bettini, Aladino Cavallini, Filiberto Ciulli, Dario Consani, Faustino Consoloni, Michelangelo Ferrera, Giovanni Battista Iop, and Armando Marchesi.
Prefect Maria Luisa D'Alessandro noted that approximately 650,000 Italian military members faced this choice, emphasizing the individual moral responsibility shown during the dissolution of institutional commands. Roberto Giannoni, the Mayor of Santa Croce sull'Arno, attended to accompany the grandson of Giovanni Battista Iop, highlighting the immense suffering and the estimated 60,000 deaths resulting from the harsh conditions in the labor camps.
