Pisa restores 12th-century church into cultural space

The First Permanent Council Commission of Pisa, led by Angelo Ciavarrella, conducted an inspection of the former San Marco in Calcesana church on September 7 to review the results of its conservative restoration.

Funded by over one million euros from PNRR resources through the PINQuA ‘Pisa THIS’ program, the project transformed the 12th-century building into a multipurpose space for cultural and social activities. The restoration included consolidating wooden structures, repairing ancient stone walls, and installing modern technological systems.

External areas were also upgraded with new trees and a garden designed for study and rest. To improve accessibility, tactile paths were installed for individuals with visual impairments. Ciavarrella described the project as a deep urban regeneration effort that combines heritage protection with the creation of new social spaces.
