Pisa to invest 7.7 million euros in public lighting overhaul
The city of Pisa has launched a major project to overhaul its public lighting infrastructure with an investment exceeding 7.7 million euros. The contract was awarded to the company Engie under a 13-year concession.
The initiative involves replacing 15,243 light points with advanced LED technology and upgrading electrical infrastructure, including 170 km of electrical lines and 224 municipal electrical panels. The project also introduces intelligent remote control systems for technological management of the network.
Lighting tones will be customized to different urban contexts: 2,200 Kelvin for the Lungarni to create a warm atmosphere, 3,000 Kelvin for the historic center, and 4,000 Kelvin for peripheral areas to ensure visibility. Additionally, the plan includes 494 new light points, with 284 dedicated to the scenic illumination of monuments such as the Pisa Walls and the Church of Santa Maria della Spina. To improve road safety, 40 pairs of high-visibility pedestrian and cycle crossings will be installed at strategic junctions.
The works are expected to last 24 months. During the first year, priority will be given to energy efficiency and the replacement of electrical lines. The project is estimated to reduce energy consumption by between 39% and 48% compared to historical levels.
