Pisa public lighting infrastructure modernization

Overview

The city of Pisa has initiated a major overhaul of its public lighting infrastructure through a 13-year concession. The project, awarded to the company ENGIE, involves an investment exceeding 7.7 million euros to replace 15,243 light points with advanced LED technology and upgrade significant portions of the electrical network, including hundreds of kilometers of lines and 224 municipal electrical panels.

The modernization includes the installation of intelligent remote control and smart metering systems to improve fault detection and energy efficiency, with expected energy savings between 39% and 48%. To balance urban aesthetics with safety, the plan utilizes differentiated light temperatures: 2,200 Kelvin for the Lungarni, 3,000 Kelvin for the historic center, and 4,000 Kelvin for peripheral areas.

Additional components of the project include the installation of 494 new light points—some dedicated to the scenic illumination of monuments like the Pisa Walls—and the installation of 40 pairs of high-visibility pedestrian and cycle crossings. The works also involve the restoration of 188 historic cast-iron poles.
