Peru alerts citizens to seismic risks and El Niño phenomenon

The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) has reported a series of recent tremors across the northern and southern regions of the country, including a 3.8 magnitude earthquake near Sechura, Piura. Authorities are warning of a significant accumulation of seismic energy off the central coast, which carries the potential for an earthquake with a magnitude near 8.8.

This seismic risk is compounded by the El Niño Costero alert, a phenomenon expected to trigger intense rainfall, flooding, and landslides (huaicos). In response, emergency preparedness has become a national priority. Experts from RIMAC and INDECI recommend that families prepare customized emergency kits based on their specific geography. Coastal residents are advised to prioritize sun protection and tsunami preparedness, while those in mountainous regions must account for different environmental challenges to ensure survival during the critical first 24 hours of a disaster.
