Pistorius and Özdemir call for AfD ban procedure
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Cem Özdemir have called for the immediate initiation of a ban procedure against specific state branches of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
In a joint contribution to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, the politicians argued that a ban is legally justified and constitutionally required. They specifically urged a focus on the völkisch state associations in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg.
Özdemir and Pistorius distinguish between the German-nationalist and völkisch elements of the party. They contend that while the former may be addressed through parliamentary and social debate, the völkisch faction poses a direct threat to the foundations of the constitution and democracy. They noted that the völkisch elements often attempt to disguise their ideology to avoid scrutiny.
Under German law, an application for a party ban must be submitted to the Federal Constitutional Court by either the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, or the Federal Government.
