The politicians specifically target the völkisch state associations of the AfD in Thuringia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Brandenburg. They distinguish between the party's German-nationalist elements, which they believe may remain within constitutional bounds, and its völkisch elements, which they claim disregard the dignity of man and threaten the constitutional order.

Thuringia's Interior Minister Georg Maier and SPD leader Bärbel Bas have also expressed support for examining the requirements for such a procedure. Conversely, the CDU/CSU alliance currently rejects a ban on the party or its regional branches, expressing concerns about impacting upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
