Romania to keep Turceni 5 coal power group operational past August deadline
Romania's Ministry of Energy has announced that the Turceni 5 coal-fired power group will remain operational beyond its scheduled August 31 shutdown date. Sorin Elisei, Secretary General of the Ministry, stated that the group provides more economic value to the country than the potential penalties incurred for missing targets set under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
The decision comes as the government seeks to ensure national energy security during periods of high consumption. The Turceni 5 and Rovinari 4 energy groups were successfully restarted and entered parallel production on Monday afternoon following previous technical issues. Union leaders at the Turceni plant noted that coal stocks exceeding 350,000 tons are available, which should support continued operations for approximately one month.
Separately, energy and utility infrastructure across Romania is undergoing various maintenance and emergency repairs. These include gas network investments in Baia Mare, electricity maintenance in Topoloveni and Ilfov, and addressing water and heating service disruptions in Timișoara and Bucharest due to network damage.
