Pity Álvarez begins trial for 2018 homicide in Buenos Aires

The oral trial of musician Cristian “Pity” Álvarez has commenced in Buenos Aires, where he faces charges for the 2018 homicide of Cristian Maximiliano Díaz in Villa Lugano. The case centers on a fatal shooting following a dispute in the Samoré housing complex.

During the initial hearing, the Tribunal Oral en lo Criminal N° 29 rejected defense requests to suspend the proceedings. The defense argued that Álvarez was not in a fit physical or mental state to participate, citing instances of drowsiness. However, judges ruled that medical reports confirm his cognitive capacity, noting his recent public appearances in concerts and interviews as evidence of his ability to face trial.

Álvarez declined to testify during the first session, stating he would provide his version “later.” He shared details regarding his health, including hypertension, diabetes, and a history of drug addiction. The trial is scheduled to consist of 11 hearings through September, with approximately 70 witnesses expected to testify. While the court acquitted him of separate 2016 charges involving threats and unlawful deprivation of liberty, the primary homicide charge remains the focus of the prosecution.
