Pity Álvarez trial suspended for medical evaluation
The criminal trial against musician Pity Álvarez for the 2018 homicide of Cristian Díaz has been suspended. The Tribunal Oral en lo Criminal y Correccional N°29 ordered a new interdisciplinary medical evaluation to determine if Álvarez possesses the psycho-physical capacity to understand the charges and participate in the legal process.
This decision follows a court order for Álvarez's involuntary psychiatric hospitalization for 90 days at Hospital Tornú, after authorities determined he posed a “certain and imminent risk to himself and/or others.” The evaluation will be conducted by the Cuerpo Médico Forense.
Defense attorneys have requested these assessments to address the musician's mental health and drug consumption issues. While the trial is paused, the court indicated that the proceedings will not be annulled, provided the suspension does not exceed certain legal limits. Results from the upcoming medical examinations are expected to clarify the future of the trial by mid-October.
