Piura faces surge in dengue cases with nearly 8,000 infections

The Piura region in Peru is facing a significant surge in dengue fever cases. According to the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa), 7,663 cases were recorded as of August 12, a figure nearly seven times higher than the total accumulated during 2025.

Of the reported cases, 5,432 are confirmed and 2,231 are considered probable. While most patients show no warning signs, 1,243 individuals have presented warning signs and 40 have developed severe dengue. The outbreak has resulted in four deaths, with three confirmed and one under investigation.

Morropón province has recorded the highest number of infections with 2,967 cases, followed by Piura with 2,727 and Sullana with 1,596. Authorities have initiated dengue vaccinations in schools and are increasing mosquito control efforts in areas like Tambogrande to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.
