Piura region in Peru hit by multiple earthquakes
The Piura region in northern Peru experienced a series of seismic events, including three consecutive earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.9, 4.0, and 4.1 occurring within an hour. These tremors had epicenters in the Pacific Ocean near Sechura. The Peruvian Navy’s Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation confirmed that no tsunami was generated by these movements. No casualties or material damages were reported in Piura following these specific maritime tremors.
This activity follows a period of significant seismic instability in the country. In the Andean region of Junín, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks have caused a humanitarian crisis, leaving over 6,400 people displaced and at least six dead. Residents in high-altitude districts like Huasicancha are facing extreme cold and lack of adequate shelter.
Experts from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) emphasize that the country’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes seismic threats permanent. Authorities are urging citizens to prioritize earthquake preparedness and safe construction practices. In response to recent regional activity, INDECI has scheduled a national multi-hazard drill for August 14 to promote emergency response protocols.
