Pix accounts for 20.5% of sales in Brazilian bars and restaurants

A survey by the Associação Brasileira de Bares e Restaurantes (Abrasel) of 2,109 establishments shows that the instant‑payment system Pix now represents 20.5% of all in‑person sales at bars and restaurants across Brazil, up from 16.5% a year earlier. Credit cards remain the dominant method with 41.5% of sales, followed by debit cards at 25.1%. Cash usage has fallen to 8.3% of transactions.

Adoption is strongest among smaller businesses: establishments with annual revenue up to R$130 thousand record Pix in 30.4% of sales, while larger firms see usage between 14.9% and 17.5%. Regional differences are notable, with the North (29.8%) and Northeast (24.2%) showing the highest Pix penetration, compared with lower rates in the Southeast, Center‑West and South.

Abrasel president Paulo Solmucci said the system’s speed, security and cost‑effectiveness make it essential for the sector.
