Pix system drives Brazilian entrepreneurship and expands features
An econometric study conducted by researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Central Bank of Brazil indicates that the Pix instant payment system has significantly contributed to the expansion of entrepreneurship in Brazil. By analyzing data from 2012 to 2025, researchers found a positive correlation between Pix usage and the growth of self-employed workers.
In addition to its economic impact, the Central Bank is exploring several expansions for the system. These include studying international integration to allow cross-border transactions in local currency, developing offline proximity payments, and implementing 'Pix Automatic' as a substitute for direct debit. The bank is also investigating ways to integrate Pix with credit markets to use future payment flows as collateral.
Furthermore, financial institutions such as Nubank, Itaú, and Banco do Brasil are offering 'Pix parcelado' (installment Pix), allowing users to pay in installments via credit limits or dedicated credit lines. Meanwhile, companies like Wise have simplified international transfers to Brazil by allowing users to send funds using only a Pix key, removing the need for complex banking details.
