Pix system updates: New fraud protections and Caixa installment feature

The Central Bank of Brazil has implemented several updates to the Pix instant payment system to enhance security and user experience. A key change involves the Special Return Mechanism (MED), where the deadline for recipients to contest a fraudulent return has been extended from 30 to 80 days. This extension aims to protect merchants and small businesses from scams where fraudsters make legitimate payments and then falsely claim they were victims of fraud to trigger a reversal.

Additionally, the Central Bank has prohibited the inclusion of advertisements, commercial offers, or external hyperlinks in Pix payment receipts. This measure, set to take effect on March 1, 2027, is intended to prevent receipts from being used as vectors for phishing and other fraudulent activities by ensuring they remain strictly for transaction documentation.

Separately, Caixa Econômica Federal has launched a new Pix feature allowing individual customers to pay via installments. This service, available through the bank's app, allows users with pre-approved credit to split payments into up to 12 installments, with transaction amounts ranging from R$ 300 to R$ 50,000.
