Pix payment system faces widespread instability in Brazil

The Pix instant payment system in Brazil experienced widespread instability on the morning of Sunday, June 23. The disruption, which began around 6:50 AM, affected transfers and real-time payments across numerous financial institutions, including Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, Itaú Unibanco, Bradesco, Santander, Nubank, and Inter.

According to monitoring platform DownDetector, approximately 13,861 error reports were recorded within a three-hour window, with complaints peaking at 8:05 AM when over 2,400 reports were filed in a single minute. The outage impacted both individual consumers and businesses, with merchants reporting difficulties receiving payments and issues with card equipment recharges.

The Central Bank of Brazil confirmed the technical instability and stated that its technical team identified the issue and restored normal operations during the morning. By 9:50 AM, reports had significantly decreased, signaling a gradual return to normalcy.
