Digital payment adoption in Brazil
Overview
Brazil is experiencing a significant decline in cash usage, driven largely by the widespread adoption of Pix, an instant-payment system. Reports indicate that by 2025, cash accounted for only 12% of point-of-sale value in Brazil, the lowest share in Latin America compared to regional averages of 23%. As the system has scaled, with nearly 80 billion transactions and over R$35 trillion moved between 2023 and 2025, the impact on consumer behavior has become evident. For younger demographics, the variety and speed of payment methods are now decisive factors in transaction completion. However, the transition presents challenges. Adoption is uneven among the elderly, where only 48% of those aged 60 or older use Pix due to concerns regarding digital scams and technical knowledge. To address social inclusion and national security, the Banco Central do Brasil maintains that physical currency will continue to coexist with digital methods. On August 23, 2026, the critical nature of this infrastructure was highlighted when the Pix system experienced widespread operational instability. Users nationwide reported difficulties with transfers, QR code usage, and banking application access. Monitoring platforms recorded a surge in complaints affecting major institutions such as Itaú, Bradesco, Santander, Nubank, Caixa Econômica Federal, Banco do Brasil, and Inter. According to DownDetector, service disruptions began between 6:30 AM and 6:50 AM, with a significant peak in complaints occurring between 8:05 AM and 8:17 AM. Itaú Unibanco acknowledged the intermittency, advising customers to check account statements to prevent duplicate payments. The incident generated over 13,000 error reports within a three-hour window, with a peak of over 2,400 reports filed in a single minute at 8:05 AM. The Central Bank of Brazil has since recognized the technical failure and confirmed that its technical team has restored normal operations, though the exact cause has not been disclosed.
