Pixar's 'Cars' returns to theaters for 20th anniversary

Disney and Pixar are rereleasing the animated film ‘Cars’ in theaters to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with screenings scheduled to begin on September 4, 2026. The theatrical return coincides with Lightning McQueen Day on September 5, which honors the character’s race car number, 95.

The anniversary celebration includes various global activations and collaborations. In the United States, a Porsche “Sally Special” vehicle will tour cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York, while special screenings are planned for Route 66 locations like the Tee-Pee Drive-In in Oklahoma. International events include a Mercedes-Benz safety car wrapped in ‘Cars’ branding appearing at the Formula 1 Gran Premio D’Italia in Monza, Italy, and life-size exhibits at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum in England and the National Automobile Museum in Italy.

Additional festivities involve NASCAR activations at the Daytona 500 and themed merchandise, such as collectible Lightning McQueen popcorn buckets from Cinemark. The franchise, originally directed by John Lasseter and released in 2006, continues to expand with ongoing development of new projects and themed experiences at Disney parks.
