Piyush Goyal advocates for WTO-compliant trade rules at G20

At the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal advocated for a WTO-compliant approach to address global trade distortions and excess capacity. Goyal emphasized that corrective measures against unfair market practices, such as dumping and predatory pricing, must rely on multilateral rules and evidence-based judicial review rather than unilateral actions. He noted that India, a domestic-demand-driven economy of 1.4 billion people, does not possess structural excess capacity.

On the sidelines of the summit, Goyal engaged in several bilateral meetings to advance India's trade diplomacy. He reviewed negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming for $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. He also met with ministers from France, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea to discuss deepening investment ties, aerospace cooperation, and potential free trade agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Regarding U.S.-India relations, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reported positive discussions with Goyal but indicated that a final bilateral trade agreement is not imminent, as both nations work to resolve remaining differences.
