India international trade and investment promotion

Overview

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has continued a series of international engagements to advance India’s trade and investment interests. At the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Goyal advocated for a WTO-compliant approach to address global trade distortions, such as dumping and predatory pricing, arguing that corrective measures should rely on multilateral rules rather than unilateral actions. He clarified that India, as a domestic-demand-driven economy, does not possess structural excess capacity. During the G20 summit, Goyal held bilateral meetings with ministers from France, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea to discuss aerospace cooperation, investment ties, and potential free trade agreements with the Gulf Cooperation Council. He also reviewed negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims for $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Regarding U.S.-India relations, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted that while discussions were positive, a final bilateral trade agreement is not imminent as both nations resolve remaining differences. In the United States, Goyal met with executives from Target, Mondelez International, Aon, and Cognition to pitch India as a hub for food processing, AI, and manufacturing. He announced plans for a large, multi-sector business delegation to visit the U.S. in early 2027. At the 5th Kautilya Economic Conclave, officials emphasized building economic resilience to navigate geopolitical friction. Principal Secretary PK Mishra noted that while domestic production may incur higher costs than importing from the cheapest markets, such capacity is vital during supply chain disruptions. He highlighted diversification efforts, such as increasing crude oil suppliers from 27 to 43 countries. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman described global uncertainty as a ‘standing condition’ and advocated for structural autonomy in strategic inputs. She noted India’s 7.8 percent real GDP growth in Q1 FY26-27 and urged private sector investment in R&D.
