Pizzo beach incident: Investigation into death of miniature Schnauzer
Investigations are underway following the death of Martin, a miniature Schnauzer, on a beach in Pizzo, Italy. The dog died from head injuries sustained after being struck by a metal umbrella pole.
Two conflicting accounts of the incident have emerged. The owner of the dog, part of a German tourist family, claims a man struck the animal with the pole and subsequently assaulted the owner. Conversely, the accused individual maintains he acted on instinct to protect his six-year-old son from dogs running without leashes, denying any intent to harm the animal or the owner.
Animal rights organizations, including the Partito Animalista Italiano, OIPA, and LEAL (Lega Antivivisezionista), have condemned the incident. LEAL has filed a formal complaint, calling for a rigorous investigation to clarify the dynamics of the event. Under Italian law, killing an animal without a proven necessity can be prosecuted as a crime under article 544-bis.
