Dog deaths on Italian beaches

Recent incidents involving the deaths of dogs on Italian beaches have prompted investigations and legal actions by animal rights groups.

In July, a German shepherd died on Cala di Forno beach within the Parco della Maremma protected area. Park authorities stated the animal had been introduced illegally, violating regulations against domestic animals in the reserve. The park has opened a formal investigation in coordination with the Grosseto prosecutor’s office, while the animal rights group AIDA described the case as “abominable” and announced plans to file a complaint regarding alleged abandonment and mistreatment.

In August, a miniature Schnauzer died on a beach in Pizzo due to head injuries caused by a metal umbrella pole. The incident involves conflicting accounts: a German tourist family claims a man struck the dog and assaulted the owner, while the accused individual maintains he acted to protect his child from unleashed dogs. Animal rights organizations, including LEAL, have filed formal complaints, noting that killing an animal without proven necessity can be prosecuted under Italian law.
