Plaffeien celebrates traditional Alpabzug cattle drive
In the Swiss canton of Fribourg, the village of Plaffeien celebrated the traditional Alpabzug, marking the end of the summer season in the mountains. Approximately 20 families participated in the event, bringing more than 1,000 animals, including cattle, goats, horses, and alpacas, down from the Alps around Schwarzsee.
The animals are traditionally decorated with flower garlands, pine branches, and large ceremonial bells, which are often family heirlooms. Christoph Overney, a farmer and head of the organizing committee, emphasized that the decorations are a traditional part of the ceremony rather than a performance for tourists, stating, “No animal is decorated for the visitors.”
The descent follows a 10-kilometer route and a 200-meter elevation change, concluding in the village where festivities include market stalls and communal dining.
