Plains fire weather crisis: dry thunderstorms spark wildfires across Texas, New Mexico and Kansas
The Storm Prediction Center issued Red Flag Warnings for critical fire weather across the Southern and Northern Plains on May 15, citing dry lightning, single‑digit humidity and strong outflow winds. About 1.27 million people were placed under a critical fire‑weather risk as dry thunderstorms moved over the Texas Panhandle, western Oklahoma and parts of southeastern Colorado.
Lightning‑induced ignitions have already produced several wildfires. In New Mexico the Line Fire, near the Texas border, burned roughly 23,000 acres and was 25 % contained by May 15. Texas saw the Hunggate Fire in Randall County threaten structures before forward progress halted. Southwest Kansas declared a state of disaster for five counties after intense fire activity, with ERC values in the 80th percentile and extreme drought conditions.
Forecasters warned that temperatures would reach the mid‑90s°F with humidity dropping into the single digits, creating a high risk of additional ignitions and rapid fire spread across the region.
