A powerful explosion caused the collapse of a two-storey residential building in the historic Plaka district of central Athens, resulting in the deaths of six people. The victims include four American tourists—two couples, one of whom was three months pregnant—as well as an elderly British man and his Greek wife.

Investigators from the Arson Crimes Department are currently examining the wreckage, focusing on the second floor of the building. Preliminary evidence suggests the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak, as the second floor was the only part of the structure with an active natural gas supply. Authorities are also investigating reports that residents had expressed concerns about gas smells in the area a year prior.

The blast caused significant damage to neighboring buildings, shops, and vehicles, with debris scattered several blocks away. Emergency services, including firefighters, rescue dogs, and thermal-imaging equipment, conducted an intensive search operation. Families of the deceased have been asked to provide DNA samples to assist in the formal identification process.
