Planet Labs to begin satellite production in Berlin

US-based Planet Labs will begin manufacturing and testing satellites in Berlin this autumn. This new facility marks the company's first full-scale production site outside of San Francisco.

According to Martin Polak, the company's German managing director, the first satellite produced in Berlin is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The facility has the potential to scale up to a capacity of 60 satellites annually. While the exact investment amount was not disclosed, it is expected to exceed eight-digit figures.

The site will focus on producing Pelican satellites, which provide high-resolution imagery for Earth observation, climate monitoring, and military intelligence. To support European customers and reduce regional dependencies, the company plans to manage missions from Germany, utilize European ground stations, and store data in European clouds.
