Planet Labs expansion and commercial growth
Overview
Planet Labs is expanding its operational footprint and financial performance through increased satellite production and growing demand for Earth-imaging services.
In late 2026, the US-based company announced plans to begin manufacturing and testing satellites in Berlin. This facility, the company’s first full-scale production site outside of San Francisco, is expected to produce Pelican satellites for Earth observation, climate monitoring, and military intelligence. The site aims for a capacity of up to 60 satellites annually and is intended to support European customers by utilizing regional ground stations and cloud storage.
Following these expansion efforts, Planet Labs reported a 58% year-over-year revenue increase to $116 million in its most recent quarter. The company’s contract backlog has reached $815 million, driven by clients such as NASA, various U.S. government agencies, and a significant multi-hundred-million-dollar deal with Germany.
