Plant-based diets linked to improved sleep quality

A study published in the scientific journal Nature Health indicates that nutrition plays a significant role in sleep quality. Research suggests that consuming plant-based foods rich in fiber and nutrients is linked to deeper and more restful sleep.

Researchers analyzed the connection between daily food consumption and nighttime sleep quality. Findings showed that a diverse diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts is associated with improvements in several sleep aspects. Specifically, a diet high in fiber is linked to more restful sleep and a higher percentage of REM sleep, which is essential for memory consolidation and dreaming.

Additionally, consuming a variety of minimally processed plant foods was associated with lower heart rates during the night. Some components in fruits and vegetables may influence GABA receptors in the brain, providing a calming effect on the nervous system. While heavy evening meals may be linked to longer sleep durations, they do not necessarily equate to higher sleep quality.
