Plastic Free mobilizes volunteers for beach and seabed cleanup at Marinella, Italy

On Saturday 11 July, the environmental group Plastic Free organized a free volunteer event to clean the beach and underwater seabed at the Marinella area of Palmi, Italy. The operation, scheduled to start at 18:00, aims to remove abandoned waste, visible plastic litter and, crucially, to collect micro‑plastic fragments hidden among the pebbles and in the shallow waters.

The cleanup is backed by the municipality of Palmi, the Italian Naval League (Palmi section), the Le Sirene diving centre, the Caposperone Resort, the Arci Chicchi social circle, the Pro Loco APS Gli Amici di Gisa, the cultural association Fogghi di Luna and the Mbuttaturi della Varia group. It follows a recent revitalisation effort by the local Macello neighbourhood committee, which cleared overgrowth and stones from the site. Volunteers must register via Plastic Free’s portal to ensure insurance coverage.

Organisers Maria Cristina Altomonte and Deborah Serratore stressed that the new effort complements, rather than duplicates, the previous work, and hope a large turnout will help keep Marinella clean and livable.
