Plateau State attacks kill at least nine people in Nigeria
At least nine people were killed in a series of attacks across communities in Plateau State, Nigeria, between Saturday night, September 19, and Sunday morning, September 20. The violence targeted several areas, including Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and neighboring communities.
In one incident, five passengers traveling as day laborers toward Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi were ambushed and shot dead. In a separate attack in Dorowa Babuje, a Baptist pastor and his secretary were killed while on their way to a church service. The pastor’s son was also reported to be critically wounded.
Eyewitnesses and local reports identified the assailants as Fulani gunmen. During the confrontations, security forces including the police and Department of State Services (DSS) were reportedly overpowered, resulting in an injured DSS officer and damage to a police armored vehicle.
The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has condemned the killings, warning that the frequent loss of life must not become normalized. NCA Chairman Rev. Joseph John Hayab urged the government and security agencies to implement proactive measures to prevent such attacks rather than merely reacting after they occur.
