Plateau State, Nigeria attack kills 20, including pregnant woman
Police confirmed that armed gunmen attacked the Kawel community in Mushere District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State early Sunday, killing 20 people. Eighteen victims died at the scene and two more succumbed to injuries later. The assailants also stormed a primary health centre, where they shot patients and staff, including a pregnant woman who was in labour. The attack left a total of 22 dead, according to survivor accounts.
Security forces, including the Violent Crime Response Unit and the Police Mobile Force, engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat. The Plateau State Commissioner of Police deployed additional tactical teams and launched a manhunt, urging residents to provide information and remain calm.
Authorities have pledged to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible, while community members mourn the loss of lives and the trauma inflicted on the health facility.
