Plateau State, Nigeria: Over 30 Christians killed in recent attacks

More than 30 Christians have been killed in Nigeria’s Plateau State over the past month during a series of attacks. Recent incidents include the deaths of three individuals in the Fungtim and Kinat communities on September 5, and two others in the Kinat and Kop-Naanle villages on September 3.

A significant attack occurred on August 18 in Bin-Per village, where 25 Christians were reportedly killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen. Local officials, including a spokesman for the Mangu Local Government Council, have confirmed these fatalities. The violence has also resulted in the destruction of homes, farmland, and crops, threatening local livelihoods.

While the Nigerian government has stated that religion is not a primary driver of the violence, research from the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa suggests that attacks against Christians are targeted. Nigeria has been identified by Open Doors as the deadliest country for Christians. In a separate incident in Barkin Ladi, an 18-year-old herder was killed and 18 cattle were shot dead in Nyarwai village.
