Playa del Carmen businesses seek fiscal aid amid sargassum beach crisis

The Cámara Nacional de Comercio, Servicios y Turismo (Canaco Servytur) of Playa del Carmen has asked the municipal government for a temporary fiscal‑stimulus program. The proposal, presented by president Alma Iovana Franco Cervantes, seeks discounts and waivers on property taxes, environmental fees, construction permits and other municipal charges to ease the economic burden on micro, small and medium‑sized enterprises hit by massive sargassum deposits and beach erosion.

Local merchants and tourism service providers have also called for urgent action to invest environmental‑tax revenues in sargassum collection and removal before the summer vacation season. They warn that the algae threatens tourist arrivals, public health – causing skin irritations, allergic reactions and respiratory issues – and the broader local economy. Business leaders demand transparency on how environmental fees are spent and stress that previous conservation programs had earned international certifications such as the Blue Flag and Playa Platina, now jeopardized by the ongoing algae bloom.
