Playa del Carmen tourism hit by putrefying sargasso and insufficient collection boats

Rotting sargasso piled up on the coastal dunes of Playa del Carmen has turned into foul‑smelling sludge, with the odor reaching the popular Quinta Avenida and driving tourists away from beaches, restaurants and hotels. Local tour operators and merchants say the stench has already reduced visitor numbers and harmed the destination’s reputation.

A brigade of the Mexican Navy’s Secretaría de Marina, together with the Federal Maritime‑Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT), is trying to extract the sludge, but they are hampered by a shortage of personnel and equipment. Only two collection vessels and a single support ship operate along the entire coastline, which the Association of Small Hotels’ president, Offner Arjona, says is far from enough. The hotel group is demanding more boats and a seat at the Playa del Carmen Environmental Sanitation Trust to influence how cleanup funds are used.

Both the tourism operators and the authorities blame poor coordination and limited resources for the crisis, warning that continued delays could further erode the area's tourism‑driven economy.
