Playa Jardín Beach Reopens Amid Disputed Microbial Contamination in Puerto de la Cruz

Microbiological contamination was detected at Playa Jardín, the main bathing area of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, between 22 and 24 June. The national bathing‑water information system flagged the presence of harmful microorganisms, leading to a temporary bathing ban.

Subsequent testing by the public‑health authority and an independent laboratory returned fully favourable results, which the municipal government cited to declare the water “excellent” and to keep the beach open. Mayor Leopoldo Afonso emphasized that the isolated June‑22 sample was contradicted by later analyses and should not alarm the public.

The opposition PSOE party alleges that authorities failed to close the beach or inform residents during the incident, demanding an investigation and an extraordinary council meeting in August. The Cabildo and local council have scheduled a press conference to address the accusations and provide clarification.
