In late June 2026, microbiological testing at Playa Jardín, the main bathing spot in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, detected harmful microorganisms, prompting a temporary swimming ban. Follow‑up analyses by public‑health authorities and an independent laboratory later reported water quality as “excellent,” leading municipal officials to keep the beach open amid political accusations from the PSOE party that the authorities had failed to adequately inform the public.

A few weeks later, in July 2026, similar concerns arose on the Andalusian coast. Beaches in Marbella (El Cable, Río Real, Los Monteros) and Atlanterra in Tarifa were closed after elevated levels of fecal bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) were found. Subsequent sampling on 23‑24 July showed microbiological parameters had returned to permissible limits, and the regional health authority lifted the precautionary bans, though the source of the contamination remained unclear.
