PlayStation 5 emulation and translation projects see technical progress

Developments in PlayStation 5 software compatibility are accelerating through multiple open-source projects. The emulator SharpEmu has reached a milestone by successfully running six titles at 60 FPS, including Dreaming Sarah, Void Terrarium, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered. While it has tested 55 titles, only 12 have reached playable status.

Simultaneously, the AnyPS5 project is pursuing a different technical approach. Rather than traditional emulation, AnyPS5 acts as a compatibility translation layer, similar to Proton. It aims to run PS5 games natively on Windows and Linux by relinking executables and recompiling shaders into SPIR-V for the Vulkan API. This method leverages the fact that the PS5 uses an x86-64 AMD Zen 2 architecture, which is compatible with modern PCs.

Other projects like KytyPS5 have also demonstrated progress, such as running Grand Theft Auto V at 40 to 60 FPS on high-end hardware, though stability remains an issue. These community efforts have seen increased interest following Sony's announcements regarding future hardware and software support.
