AnyPS5 and RPCS3 projects reach major emulation milestones
The development of unofficial emulation projects for PlayStation consoles is seeing significant technical milestones. The AnyPS5 project, which aims to run PlayStation 5 games on Windows and Linux, has reportedly achieved 100% coverage of the console’s GPU shader instructions. This allows for the translation of graphics workloads to PC hardware via Vulkan. While graphics translation is complete, the project still faces challenges with system libraries, which currently sit at approximately 84% coverage.
Simultaneously, modders have successfully ported the RPCS3 emulator to run natively on jailbroken PlayStation 5 hardware. This allows for the execution of PlayStation 3 games at up to 60 FPS on the newer console, suggesting that the lack of official backward compatibility for PS3 titles on the PS5 may be due to software optimization and licensing rather than hardware limitations. Early tests on a jailbroken PS5 Pro show varying results, with some titles running fully while others face performance issues.
Users are cautioned regarding the AnyPS5 project, as developers have issued warnings about malicious links. Unofficial repositories on platforms like GitHub may contain malware designed to steal data, and users are advised to only use official developer-verified links.
