PLD suspends presidential aspirant consultation due to equipment shortage

The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has suspended its presidential aspirant consultation, which was originally scheduled for October 18, 2026. The decision was announced by the Organizing Commission for the Presidential Aspirant Consultation (CONAP) following an emergency meeting.

CONAP coordinator Cristina Lizardo stated that the suspension is due to the inability to guarantee the automated voting system mandated by the party's Central Committee. The party required approximately 2,200 technological devices to conduct the process nationwide, but the Central Electoral Board (JCE) only provided 600 units, leaving a deficit of 1,600 machines.

Internal reactions have been mixed. Aspirants Gonzalo Castillo and Francisco Domínguez Brito expressed disagreement with the decision but stated they would respect the party's discipline. Conversely, Francisco Javier García criticized the suspension, alleging that the commission failed to consult the aspirants before the decision and accused the organization of withholding information regarding the JCE's refusal to provide more equipment.

Additionally, the party cited disputes regarding the electoral roll and legal challenges involving the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE). As a result of the suspension, the formal selection of the PLD's presidential candidate for the 2028 elections has been postponed to the period starting in July 2027.
