Economic Police conducted a large-scale operation at the St. George University Hospital in Plovdiv, targeting alleged fraud involving the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). Approximately 10 individuals were detained, including Prof. Dr. Mariela Geneva-Popova, the Dean of the Medical Faculty and Head of the Rheumatology Clinic.

Authorities searched the hospital's Rheumatology and Nephrology clinics, seizing various medical and financial documents. The investigation focuses on a scheme involving fictitious hospitalizations used to illicitly obtain funds from the NHIF. The police action disrupted medical services in the affected departments, leaving patients waiting as doctors' phones were also seized during the process.

This operation follows a prior investigation into a suspected organized crime group that allegedly caused 500,000 euros in damages through 4,000 fraudulent medical procedures and referrals.
