St. Georgi University Hospital fraud investigation

Overview

Law enforcement and medical oversight agencies conducted a large-scale raid on the St. Georgi University Hospital in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The operation targeted suspected financial crimes involving the systemic draining of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) through fictitious hospitalizations.

During the investigation, authorities focused on the hospital’s rheumatology and nephrology clinics, seizing medical histories, financial reports, and other documentation. The police activity disrupted hospital functions and caused many patients to miss scheduled appointments.

As the investigation progressed, approximately 10 individuals were detained, including Prof. Dr. Mariela Geneva-Popova, the Dean of the Medical Faculty and Head of the Rheumatology Clinic. The probe follows previous investigations into an organized crime group that allegedly caused 500,000 euros in damages through approximately 4,000 fraudulent medical procedures and referrals.
