Plovdiv Municipality launches competition to redesign Trimontium underpass
The Plovdiv Municipality has launched an international architectural competition titled ‘Liminal’ to redesign the Trimontium underpass. The project aims to transform the underpass from a mere transit point into a cultural and attraction hub that serves as an entrance to the city’s forum complex.
Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov noted that this initiative follows other urban developments, such as the Archaeological underpass, intended to expand Plovdiv’s pedestrian zones. Deputy Mayor Plamen Panov emphasized a new policy for managing underpasses, suggesting they be opened to creative industries.
The design requirements, developed by architect Balzhiev, prioritize accessibility, the integration of archaeological structures, and high-quality landscape solutions. Key mandatory features for the new space include a tourist center and 24-hour accessible restrooms. Because the site is located within the historical ‘Philippopolis-Trimontium-Plovdiv’ zone, all plans must be coordinated with the National Institute of Immovable Cultural Heritage.
