Plovdiv railway overpass project receives green light from Bulgarian ministry
The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works approved the National Railway Infrastructure Company (NKZI) to prepare the detailed design and investment plan for modernising the railway line between Plovdiv Central Station and Filipevo. The key element is a 1,370‑metre railway overpass over Koprivshtitsa boulevard, which will replace existing level crossings that cause traffic jams.
The project will double the track, raise it 5‑7 metres, allow train speeds up to 85 km/h, and add three new urban railway stations at Peshtersko Shose, Shesti Septemvri and Bulgaria boulevards. It also includes demolition of the old Iron Bridge over the Maritsa River and construction of a new, larger railway bridge, while the municipality plans a separate road bridge with two decks and three lanes.
These steps mark the first administrative phase, enabling land‑use planning, property expropriation procedures and technical specifications to be finalised before construction begins.
