Plovdiv infrastructure development
Overview
In late July 2026, Plovdiv initiated several major infrastructure projects. On 30 July, the municipal government announced a €9.16 million public procurement to replace the water-sewage network, repave streets, and add green spaces in the central district. The project covers the block bounded by Tsar Boris III Blvd, Graf Ignatiev St, Petko D. Petkov St, and Bogomil St. Mayor Georgi Stamenov noted the repair is “absolutely necessary” due to frequent pipe failures on Graf Ignatiev, a key artery. Contract bids are due by 31 August 2026. On 31 July, the national Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works approved the first administrative phase of a railway overpass project. The National Railway Infrastructure Company (NKZI) will design a 1.37-km overpass over Koprivshtitsa boulevard to replace level crossings. The plan includes doubling tracks, raising them to allow speeds of 85 km/h, adding three new urban stations (Peshtersko Shose, Shesti Septemvri, and Bulgaria boulevards), and constructing a new railway bridge over the Maritsa River. By late August, legal challenges and procedural issues began impacting municipal road projects. A complaint filed by Parsek Group with the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) has challenged the selection of Dragiev i Ko for the €4.79 million reconstruction of Park Otdih i Kultura Street. Furthermore, the procurement for the €2.8 million Arch. Kamen Petkov Street reconstruction was terminated due to documentation discrepancies. Amidst these challenges, the municipality has allocated nearly €4 million within its 2026 capital program for urban green spaces and irrigation. Significant funding is directed toward the Trakia district, including the commencement of construction for Kan Krum Park using European funds. For the Mother and Child Park, €46,998 has been allocated for the completed technical project, though full renovation—estimated to cost over €2 million—will require future funding from the 2027 budget or state support.
