Plovdiv to ban older vehicles in city center from October 2026
Starting October 1, 2026, the city of Plovdiv will implement a low emission zone known as the ‘Small Ring’ in its central district. The restriction will operate annually from October 1 to April 30, prohibiting vehicles from the first and second ecological groups from entering the designated area.
The zone is bounded by Russki, Shesti Septemvri, Tsar Boris III Obedinitel, and Hristo Botev boulevards. While the zone covers 26 entrances, the boundary boulevards themselves will remain open to all traffic. The measure aims to reduce air pollution, though officials noted that plans exist to expand the restricted area by 2028.
Exemptions are available for residents and tenants living within the zone, provided they submit necessary documentation to the Parking and Repatriation department. Historical vehicles, public transport, and vehicles used for social services or transporting persons with disabilities are also exempt. Vehicles in the third, fourth, and fifth ecological groups are permitted to enter.
The policy has sparked social debate, as critics argue it disproportionately affects low-income individuals and small businesses who rely on older, more affordable vehicles.
