Electric vehicle market expands in Indonesia with new subsidies and dealerships
The electric vehicle (EV) market in Southeast Asia is seeing significant developments in infrastructure and consumer incentives. In Indonesia, the government is preparing an EV motorcycle subsidy of Rp3 million per unit, expected to begin in September 2026. Brands such as Alva and Gesits have been identified as potential recipients of this program, which carries an estimated budget of Rp3 trillion. Industry players in Banten have suggested that an ideal subsidy range would be between Rp3 million and Rp5 million to maintain price stability after the program ends. Additionally, stakeholders have expressed support for a trade-in scheme for conventional motorcycles to replace them with electric models.
Market expansion is also evident in the automotive sector. BYD and Denza are increasing their presence in East Java, Indonesia, by opening four new dealerships across five cities to meet growing demand for electrification. Meanwhile, the Indonesian passenger EV market is becoming increasingly competitive, with various models from manufacturers like Wuling, VinFast, and BYD now available at price points below Rp300 million.
