Plus operator Polkomtel begins major network modernization

Polkomtel, the operator of the Plus network, has signed a binding agreement with Cellnex and Towerlink to undertake a major modernization and expansion of its mobile infrastructure. The project aims to increase the number of points of presence by approximately 5,000 by 2041.

The modernization includes a complete replacement of the active radio access network (RAN) layer using equipment from Nokia and Ericsson. The operator plans to expand its 5G capabilities across several frequency bands, including 700 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3.6 GHz, utilizing technologies such as Massive MIMO and active antenna systems.

This investment follows a period of market shifts in Poland. In the first half of 2026, mobile number portability data showed Orange leading with a positive balance of 36,894 numbers, while Plus experienced a loss of 67,675 numbers. The infrastructure overhaul is intended to improve network coverage, capacity, and cost efficiency to strengthen the operator's market position.
