Plus Ultra rescue investigation targets suspected money laundering network
Investigators are probing a financial network accused of laundering 53 million euros from the Plus Ultra airline rescue. Documentation from the Spanish Audiencia Nacional suggests the group allegedly spent approximately 98,000 dollars to remove internet news linking them to the laundering of funds potentially embezzled by Venezuelan government officials.
French prosecutors have identified a real estate portfolio in France, including properties in Paris and the Las Landas coast, valued at nearly 20 million euros. These assets were allegedly acquired through shell companies to obscure the origin of the funds. Investigators believe the suspect's wealth may also extend to the United States, Peru, and Dubai.
The investigation focuses on the 53 million euro rescue package provided to Plus Ultra by SEPI in March 2021. Authorities are working to determine if these public funds were used for the private real estate acquisitions. The case involves several individuals, including Luis Felipe Baca Arbulu and Simon Leo Verhoeven, and is being coordinated through international judicial cooperation with Switzerland and France.
